I think Russia is extremely paranoid and do things like this to prove how strong they are.

  1. Control, oil, respect, tradition, criminality of the Russian system, fear of freedom, and a desire to return to the old days.   People need to do some research.  South Ossetian Militias get their heavy weapons from somewhere.  They have been shelling Georgian positions along the mutual front for months, just nobody in the west pays attention to such news.  With the logic that most South Ossetians want to be part of Russia so the Georgians are in the wrong, then the United States should pull out of Southern California less we offend Mexico.  The scope of the Russian military operations in Georgia were not put together and planned in the last 7 days, more like 7 months.  Ask any military person who understands logistics, food, fuel, troop movements, and more importantly Russian troop movements.

  2. No Russia is not paranoid, they are extremely angry over Ronald Reagan beating them at their own game by ending the cold war, back in the 1980’s. They seek revenge from being relegated to a second class status and losing their territory that is part of western Europe now. The bear is once again on the prowl.

As westerners, we ought to recognize that Vladimir Putin is still KGB, even though the KBG no longer exists officially. Its still alive and well in the minds of the Russian leaders.

Russia is invading Georgia specifically because they broke away from the old Soviet empire and want to join the UN.

  3. That's what one of my students says. He's in the final year of the Spanish military academy. He says it's a strong-arm shakedown on Russia's part. They want to show Georgia that they can stop the war whenever they want to, and that they are the ones who call the shots.

  4. They did indeed use a slim opportunity to show a lot of muscle. But looked at from their side, South Ossetia has greater ties to Russia than to the rest of Georgia, and there's probably a majority of South Ossetians who'd rather seceed and return to Russian rule. Many have Russian citizenship, though the validity of it is in the eye of the beholder. The Georgian leadership has made a priority of bringing both South Ossetia and another breakaway republic, Abkhazia, under their control, and used military force to which the Russians responded with greater military force, citing the protection of the Russian citizens in the region as justification.

  5. RUSSIA WANTS GEORGIA BACK, GEORGIA USE TO BE PART OF THE USSR, AND NOW RUSSIA WANTS IT BACK

  6. Here is a lot of info about the war in Ossetia, from the very beginning:

  7. Georgia invaded South Ossetia because they wanted them as a part of their country.

South Ossetia is an alli of Russia and when Georgia invaded South Ossetia Russia responded by using greater force.

Yes they did show how strong they are and the fact that the U.S. is involved in two war fronts helps them push this idea across.
