Can someone that knows alot about cars expalin these concepts to me?

I'm getting into mechanics and pretty much anything that invloves cars can someone explain these terms to me:

Combustion

Transmission

Pistons

Displacement

Turbochargers

Converters

Liters

RPM

  1. Combustion is burning, but for cars it is probably referring to what happens after the fuel is ignited in the engine.

    Transmissions generally convert one shaft speed to another.

    Pistons are the cylindrical things inside the engine that go up and down and turn the crankshaft.

    Displacement is the volume change of all the pistons.  Generally more displacement means a larger engine with more power.  Example:  454 cubic inches is pretty big.  For modern or foreign engines, displacement maybe in cubic centimeters, or cc.

    TurboChargers compress air prior to putting it in the engine.  They generally ingrease power for a given engine size.
