Can someone try and explan this quote for me please? 'Only that day dawns to which we are awake...'?

If we are asleep, we don't see the sun come up.  If we stay asleep, we miss the day, too.  This is a metaphor for how we live our lives.  If we are unconscious, we don't see the life or world that is right in front of us.  The longer we are unconscious, the more we miss.
