... explain the significance of midheaven for me? What dictates what sign a person's midheaven will be in? How is it different to a person's rising sign? Am I even using 'midheaven' the right way in a sentence?

My midheaven is in virgo (.....), but my rising sign is sagittarius. What does this mean?

  1. The Midheaven is the sign that falls on the cusp of your 10th house, the house pertaining to career. In a way, it can act as a mask, much like the Asc., but it represents our goals, and means of achieving them, and the face we put on in the working world. It can show you the areas of work in which you strive in, and in what positions you feel most comfortable in. While the Rising sign is also a mask, and represents how you handle situations and interact with others, it is much more personal, being in your first house.

  2. Midheaven (when we look at the horoscope) it is the point at High Noon directly the highest point in the sky the Sun (appears) to rise, while the Asc. (Rising sign) is the furthest point East the horizon was at the time of your birth. Your Sun placement falls in a house based upon that birth time and birth place (long.& lat) location.

So, let's say you were born at 10:50 am at 83W11 41N19 -- your Rising sign would be somewhere between Scorpio and Sag. Of course there is somewhat of a difference if you were born during daylight savings time, or war time. Also if you were born North or South declination. This issue is largely relative to Astronomy portions of horoscope erection.

As for the meaning of the Rising (1st house) and Mc (10th house)-- we often take into consideration the Dsc (Descendant  7th House) and Nadir (4th house cusps) as well.  These represent the Cardinal axis of the Zodiac. Your rising sign (significant of how you appear) just like the sun rise -- So, other's see you as a Sagittarius -- if you were born a Virgo, then others see more Sagittarius presence.

If you have Virgo on the 10th house, you're obviously very servient to others, devoted, responsibility conscious, and you lead the life of an apprentice, Jilly of all trades usually. Sometimes the profession (indicated by the 10th house) is one of a healing helping profession, or even that of a specialty craftsman.

Now -- that's a tiny nutshell to your question, but really, the focus in astrology is not the signs, but the planets and where they're placed. If you are born with a stellium of planets in the first house (rising) they are all in Sagittarius -- this really puts a whammy on your daily horoscope and no matter what your sun sign Sagittarius will be a primary issue -- you'll behave more like a Sag. Each house represents a different part of life, and wherever the planets are in the scope is where you'll carry out those energies. Then we have to consider aspects and transits to those natal charts as well....A lot to absorb...
