I have just applied to take a 'child day care' course with www.ncchomelearning.co.uk and apparently i will earn the equivalent of an nvq 3. Is this course enough to help me get work in a nursery or as a nanny? What other qualifications will I need? Btw I have no previous childcare experience.

  1. Yes, it would help kids!!!!

  2. You have to get some experience - you might not even like working with children - it can be, to say the least, pretty stressful! Find a placement. I own a nursery and I wouldn't offer a job to anyone, no matter what their qualififcations, without the relevant experience.

  3. i have just started the same course for early learning and development with ncc. the level after you have taken the additional examinations available gives you the same as having an nvq3 but you must take the 5 test papers as well else you only get the basic. it is def recognised by offsted.

  4. It will not really be the same as an NVQ as NVQ`s are qualifications taken whilst gaining experience in the actual workplace. I would have though you will need experience as well somewhere to go with this course, even if it`s voluntary or unpaid.

  5. NVQ are qualifications gained whilst having practical experience. I really cannot see that any course which does not require this can be equivalent . Childcare is a specialist subject which needs hands on experience. If I was you I would apply to to a bona fide childcare course with your local FE college.

  6. Whatever qualification you are working towards when it comes to being employed most employers look for people who have basic maths and english on their CV.

  7. i can help. what you need?

  8. stevie b is spot on with her advice u would be better doing a nvq3

  9. Even though it is a home learning course you should also need to do a nursery/pre-school placement.  Have you been instructed to organise this?   If not, then it cannot be considered to be an NVQ.  I have volunteers working at my nursery because they need a certain amount of work experience to go along with their course.  If you haven't been instructed to do this, how about organising some voluntary work at a nursery/pre-school for yourself  so that you are gaining experience while doing the course.  Then when you have finished you will have practical experience to offer a future employer as well as the qualification.
