Can someone who works out of a Union Hall write off mileage?

I am an electrian working 60 miles one way from the house and I want to know if I can write of my mileage because I took a call from my union hall

  1. You can't write off mileage from your home to place of employment, no matter the mileage.  You're allowed to write off mileage in excess of your home to office commute.

    If you normally drive 20 miles each way to work, then you can only claim the miles above 20 when making the mileage claim, no matter what direction you go.  If you work from the home, you can claim all miles, but I don't know that this would apply to you, since it doesn't sound like you're actually home based.  If you can make a case for it, though, that you take calls from home, then you should be able to claim all miles.  If you report in to the union hall for assignments, then you'd have to deduct the miles from your house to the hall from your total claim.
