My fiance wants to be a high school history teacher, and is starting out by taking a few classes this semester. He is 24. When he was 19, he got arrested for armed burglary. We saw that our county's school hiring requirements said that if this specific offense was more than ten years ago that he could be hired with a careful review. We'd like to know his chances of being hired, and passing the security clearance for internships for that matter, before he takes all the classes and gets declined at the end of it all. It's been four years, and by the time he needs to do his internships (he's taking one or two classes a semester) it will have been over ten years since it happened. There's a chance, but how good of a chance is it?

  1. The chances are slim to none he will be given a chance. Armed Burglary is a very serious offense and 4 years is not nearly enough time. Not to mention he committed the crime as an adult. In the unlikely event his fingerprint screening passes, few schools districts or schools would even give him a second look.

I certainly would never let someone who committed a violent crime work anywhere near my school. I wouldn't even allow a parent volunteer at my school with that kind of offense.

Sorry to say it, but he has seriously limited his career choices by committing such a horrible crime.

  2. i would go to the district( u personally) can call them up and say a friend.. blah blah blah...

get their consensus and proceed on their advice.

some districts dont want anything major on the record others may have the 10 year rule but then add provisos onto that.

  3. Not in California.

It is all spelled out in your states education code. here is what Californias ed code states: :

"..the law prohibits the Commission from issuing any credential to and requires the Commission to revoke a credential already issued to a person who has been convicted of any crime listed in Education Code section 44424"

    The ed code:

"44424.  (a) Upon the conviction of the holder of any credential

issued by the State Board of Education or the Commission on Teacher

Credentialing of a violation, or attempted violation, of a violent or

serious felony as described in Section 44346.1, or any one or more

of Penal Code Sections 187 to 191, inclusive, 192 insofar as this

section relates to voluntary manslaughter, 193, 194 to 217.1....."

armed robbery is california penal code 213:

"213.  (a) Robbery is punishable as follows:"

Check your states education code as well as your states penal code. If you are in my state the chance is zero.
