I know of a guy named John Francis who got a PhD without uttering a word. He was mute by choice. I am not from the US, so bear with me for any misunderstandings, but aren't there oral exams in colleges/universities? If I choose to be mute even if technically I am not (ie. I have a severe stammer or similar condition) can I earn a degree just like everyone else? How does that work?

Your can read about John Francis from Wikipedia:

  1. sure you can get a degree if you want to, but how are you going to function in the real world?

I suggest getting professional help to overcome your stammer

  2. ye

  3. First of all, there are very few if any oral exams in American universities.  Secondly, I know a kid from Lebanon with a severe stammer and he does just fine trying to get through it.  The professors and students all have a lot of patience, and it will be OK.  Don't hold yourself back because of it, and don't be mute.  Everyone wants to hear your opinion, even if it takes a little longer to express it.
