Question:

Can someone with heavy periods use a "keeper"?

I'm asking this question on behalf of my mum. She's mid 40's, and lately her periods have become really heavy. She soaks through several pads a day, and doesn't use tampons. I have talked to her about getting a keeper, and think it might be a good option, but she thinks she may overfill it really quickly. Any one else have/had heavy periods and use/d a keeper? Was it effective? I've never used a keeper myself (considering it though) so not really sure what they're like. Are they comfortable? I've tried tampons and find them uncomfortable, but not sure if the keeper is similar. Any personal experience/s is appreciated. Thanks

  1. I have not tried the keeper. Has your mom discussed her heavy bleeding with her gyn?

I understand having bad experiences making a person leery of doctors, but if she sees a good gyn, she/he may be able to do something about the heavy flow. Sometimes you have to see more than one doctor in order to find one that is a good fit. Don't be intimidated, if a doctor treats you badly, fire him/her and find another. Go with her to the doctor if that will make her feel more at ease.

  2. I just got my Divacup (a different brand) Saturday. I thought I had heavy periods, but the cup proved me wrong. I was surprised at how little blood could cause such a huge mess. Even if her periods are horrible, it should make changes less frequent. I haven't had any messes since I got my cup. It has been a wonderful period, it's almost too bad that it is nearly over.

Try looking up all the different brands. The Keeper is made of latex rubber and could cause a sensitivity to latex products with extended use. The other brands are made of silicone, so it may be a better option. I chose Divacup because it was actually sold in a town close to me. Some other brands are Mooncup(UK), Lunette, Miacup, Ladycup. Good luck, I hope she likes it if she tries it!

  3. Maybe she should try it out on a day when she will be staying at home and see how it goes. SHe might be surprised.
