Question:

Can sore throat or teething cause loose stools? Is it normal for breastfed 10 mo to have 3-5 soiled nappies?

Doctor told me that frequent loose stools or diarrhea is nothing serious as long as there's no blood in it, and the stools isn't very watery.

So, is Green and Watery stools a bad sign?

He also advised to stop all kinds of meat/chicken and give only vegs and certain fruits (bananas, apples, pears) and rice water (?) until things get better.

Now after about 1 week, my son still has frequent bm (3-5, as opposed to 1-2 before he got sick), but not watery, only pasty.

But he recently starts coughing too.

So, do you have any suggestions?

  1. Yes if your child is teething it can cause loose stools, runny nose, cough (due to the drainage of the runny nose.) fever, and loss of appetite. It sounds like that may be what is wrong with your son. Just try to push fluids. Good Luck I hope he feels better soon.

  2. I agree with your Doctor - it doesn't sound like there is too much wrong.

If your child is ill with a mucusy infection, they tend to swallow a lot of the mucus rather than spitting in out..or blowing their nose - that is why their stools become looser...

Also, you quite often get bouts of diarrhoea with teething.

The best thing to look out for is your child's skin. If it is still the normal colou (not too pale) and if their mouth looks wet, then your child is probably still fine...

If you are worried about ANY of these things though, contact your GP again - they really don't mind!!

Try putting him to bed with his head slightly raised (put a pillow under the mattress or books under the legs of the cot - this will help him to breathe and hopefully reduce the coughing!

    Best of luck!
