Question:

Can soybean hay be fed to equines? Pros-cons?

I have heard that soybeans can be cut and baled for feed to animals and was wondering if they can be fed to equines. Pros-cons-anyone done this? realy answers only, if you don't know please do not answer with information that is not helpful. Thank you for all genuine help.

  1. Yes, that's all my grandfather ever fed his horses. They all had very shiny coats and very healthy, plus the mares were very fertile.  The only con I can think of is that I'm now allergic to soy since I grew up in the middle of soy fields each year.


  2. i have been feeding some of it to my miniature donkey for 3 years now -- he seems to like the change of diet -- since i give him some other third or fourth day!!!

  3. Soybean hay is a very good feed for horses.  It ranks up there with alfalfa in protein and other nutrients. The only down side is that it may have a greater chance of being dusty or moldy, which of course can be very bad for horses.  Just be sure you are buying a good quality hay.
