Can store's charge more than the state tax?

California's tak is 8.25% but i recently

bought something and i noticed they

charger me 8.75% can they do that?

There are certain areas of California that are 8.75%.

All of Alameda County for example.

well sometimes the tax rate can change when your in a different city

sales tax can be different in different cities.  I noticed that when I was in the Houston area and noticed different sales tax for Houston and Sugarland

So yes, the tax can be different depending on where you shop

They can have city tax. I think there are other ones. We pay about 3.

Theres actually two taxes you pay- state tax and county tax. The county tax might be .50%. The store cannot charge an additional tax fee.

Your state tax is 8.25%.  However, localities can charge their own sales tax.  It is likely that where you bought the item, the local sales tax was .50%.
