Question:

Can stretches in the leather covering of a couch be simply removed?

We are looking a buying a leather lounge suite cheaply. One piece has had something heavy stacked on it during transport. The arm rests have stretch depressions in the leather and probably the under-foam. It would be a good buy if we could be assured we could remove these indentations once purchased. Can it be done easily please?

  1. Look under the arm.  If you can see how the leather is attached and you can remove and reattach it, okay.  It is likely that the material under the covering is not recovering, you will need to replace it.  If in doubt take a picture and show it to someone who does reupholstery.  Their work is expensive.

  2. Not easily no.

Once the leather has stretched like this especiallly from a heavy object it is very hard to get it to go back so the panel of leather would need replacing which will mean having a panel of leather coloured to match the existing leather as the original is unlikely to be available.  This panel and the foams will then need to be replaced by an upholsterer which will not be cheap.
