I am wondering if a students without there high school diploma or GED can attend Junior College. I was only 5 credits from graduation (an had already completed all of my compulsory credits) when I get sick senior year and could not return. Now I am healthy and want to go to Junior College, it isn't a big deal as far as money goes, my business is doing very well, I would just like to have a college education to my name. Does anyone know of any states/colleges that allow this that also have on campus res?

  1. I know that in California anyone over 18 can attend junior college.  It's not uncommon for high school dropouts to attend.

  2. I am assuming you are speaking of community colleges supported by the state rather than junior colleges which tend to be privately run.  Yes, you don't need a high school diploma 18 and older to enroll at a community college.  By law, community college's are designed to serve the community without discrimination and this includes not having any set standard for credentials.

Sorry Hotblonde, but you are completely wrong.  Fact is, majority of incoming students to a CC *only* have an equivalent of 8th grade math (pre-algebra) and that's when they're coming straight out of high school too, with a diploma!  We're not even talking about 40 year olds who haven't set foot in a high school for decades, but fresh 18 YO's out of there.   Just look at the huge lists of courses for basic and algebraic math classes offered.  Students take placement tests to ensure they are not taking a math or English course that they aren't ready for.  CC's specialize in offering remedial coursework.  That is, in fact, a major issue today with CC's spending a ton of money on remedial education when it should be high school's themselves preparing the students for college level work.

  3. As far as I am aware, you must have a high school diploma or a GED to attend a community college.  If you did not, then people that dropped out in 8th grade and never learned more than their multiplication tables could apply once they were 18 and attend college.  That would never work!

Colleges do not take in community members and nurture them and bring them up to speed in order to be able to do college level work.  Students must meet requirements for any college no matter what kind it is....even if it is a community college.

This is what adult education programs are...and what GEDs are available for.

I suggest you get a GED.  Attend a community college for a year, then apply for a university.  You must do EXTREMELY well while in community college though!
