Can stuttering be cured?

Since I had mild stroke, I have times that I stutter. This occurs only when I speak, ironically never when I sing. It has gotten better, but is very frustrating at times. Do you know of anyone who has been completely cured of this problem?

I know, complete surprise, I seldom ask this questions this serious.

  1. I used to stutter when I was a child, and I had to go to a speech class to overcome it.  Now I rarely do it =)

  2. I know childhood stuttering can be cured with time and practice but I am not sure about ones due to a stroke.  Strokes run in my family, alot so those I know and unfortunately even a minor one causes brain damage. So if that part of the brain is damaged you may need a specialist to try to train another part to do the job or maybe it can only be lessened.  Don't wait though, with strokes you have to start the recovery asap, the longer you wait the greater your chances of not gaining complete recovery.

  3. Stuttering sometimes resolves spontaneously and there are many treatments that can improve the symptoms.

One treatment is a simple breathing exercise.  Before you speak, you take in a large breath.  You then speak as you let that breath out, speaking constantly as the air leaves, even if you make errors, just keep speaking.

If your stuttering is worse in certain situations, practice these situations more.  For example, if your stuttering is worse in public, spend more time practicing your speech in public until you are no longer shy about it.

You can also seek the guidance of a speech pathologist.

  4. Yes, but it take time.

I used to have this problem when I was about 4 years old.  I spent time with a speach therapist and they helped me to slow down and think before I talk.  The problem I had is my mind was trying to make my mouth talk at the same speed I was thinking.

  5. my cousin stuttered most of his life, i believe that if you go to a speech therapist they'll be able to help you

  6. I think mzlady is right....a speech therapist could help you I'm sure! It's worth a try Chief!!!

  7. Contact The Stuttering Foundation of America; I know that stuttering caused by genetics is not curable, but there are techniques to learn to lessen the episodes.  I don't know about when it is caused by a stroke.  It must have effected the speech part of the brain.  Since stroke victims can regain loss of the use of a limb through physical therapy, I bet speech therapy could help.
