Can subscription services be sent to collection agencies?

I have a domain name that I bought a year of registration. I canceled my credit card and had no plans to renew the domain after the year was up. The registrar 1and1.com, did not expire the domain, sent the bill to collections, and now I'm getting harrassed by NCO financial. Doing a search for "1and1 nco" I find they do this a lot.

I always thought that subscriptions such as magazines, clubs, etc.. that I pay for in advance cannot go to collections.

how can I fight the $18.95 collection agency charge?

  1. Send them a demand to validate letter, especially if you are within 30 days of their initial contact. NCO will usually fold like a cheap lawn chair with a DV, and it would be extremely funny to rack up some FDCPA violations on a $18.95 bill.

  2. Oh yeah, without a doubt.  So, it would be a good idea to just pay them, too many problems, and hard to fight for that amount, you will probably waist time and money trying to resolve this issue.

  3. They can.  Why didn't  you cancel the domain registration?  How much money are they claiming you owe?  If it is just the $18.95, is it worth your time to fight it?

  4. they certanly can...
