I would like to plant some in a jar, with the lid on and was wondering if they could survive like this.

  1. You could make a small hole in the lid which would provide enough air for it. Unless you hardly ever watered it the humidity in the jar wouldn't be good for it. Normally things like ferns would be grown in that type of environment.

  2. Why does the lid have to be on?  If you're not sure, can't you plant them and alternate having the lid on and off?  Why not plant regular things that you know live in that type of environment?  Succulents need lots of water, I know that.  But, I think if they're in a closed jar, with moisture getting all in there, they can rot from the excessive moisture.

  3. All living things need air (more specifically Oxygen.

  4. Life as we know it cannot survive without air, Human bodies require the oxygen , while plants need CO2, which is what we exhale, If you are interested in making an aquaruim or old fish bowl, Ventilation is weak.
