I am not aware of any specific research that supports this hypothesis.  Logically, if a bacterium can use the sugar as an energy source it would grow better.  However, undesirable species of bacteria could benefit as well.  I have heard of adding molasses, old cola sodas and other sugar sources to compost to enhance the breakdown of leaves and grasses.  The sugar could also enhance the growth of beneficial fungi in the soil.

    If you have a cheap source of sugar and garden space, you could conduct an experiment with sugar treated soil and untreated to grow specific vegetables.  You could compare the yields from the plants for the two plots!  Or you could do a small scale test using potted vegetables.


  2. If the bacteria gain energy from the sugar, then yes.
