  2. the signs | | mean the absolute value.  Absolute value of a positive number is itself...eg | 6| = 6, and, absolute value of a negative number is the positive number with the same value...eg | -7| = 7.  | 5 - 2(1) | = |5 - 2| = 3...12 - 3 = 9.
