Question:

Can surround sound pass from ps3, to hdtv, then to receiver?

Currently, my ps3 connects to my hdtv via hdmi, and the hdtv connects to the receiver via optical cable. Sound is passing through, and it matches up with the video, but does not appear to be the 5.1 signal. As my receiver has only one optical input (currently attached to tv), I would like to avoid connecting a separate optical cable from the ps3 to the receiver if possible. I may have no choice, but this is my last ditch effort to find a solution that doesn't involve taking the lcd off the wall.

  1. if the hdtv have an audio optical/digital output and input its suppose to work because as you said the digital sound pass-through the tv or in your case you have thru the hdmi you need to check the tv settings and the hdmi settings maybe to enable 5.1 pass-through or something like it in the audio menu.

  2. does your receiver accept HDMI?? If not seriously consider saving $350 and buying an Onkyo 605, 2 HDMI cables and you'll have PCM 5.1 (assuming you already have decent speakers)

  3. It all depends on the TV. Some will not even accept Dolby Digital via HDMI.  Some accept DD, but they just pass it through, and some will accept DD but only pass through PCM. So, check your TV's specs. (Most TVs will not process DTS either).
