Can sweet and sour sauce be made without tomatoes and bell peppers?

I havent used fresh tomatoes before but here is what I do for a very easy and authentic sweet and sour sauce. get about 1/4 cup of canola oil very hot, cook in 1 bell pepper and 1 onion slightly and add 1 clove of garlic then add 1/2 cup of ketchup, 1/3 cup of jelly(jelly only) such as the apple jelly. get it to a boil and it done. you can omit the peppers

Dont wear about the peppers and tomatoes as long as you get the ones from the vine, you wont die
