Question:

Can teething cause a lack of interest in taking fluids?

I asked a question earlier about my concern with my daughter's lack of interest in taking fluids. She's had 6oz of fluids since Sunday evening.

I know that she has been trying to cut her two top eye teeth for a week now and they just won't come through for her. She's very clingy and irritable, not her normal self at all, and refusing fluids of all kinds. We've pretty much had to force them into her.

We've found a solution today to get some fluids in her: Freeze washcloths and let her suck on them.

I'm still worried about her lack of interest in taking milk though. I know she needs at least 16oz a day and she's not taking any milk at all. Our carton is going to waste.

Could teething and trying to cut the eye teeth be the cause of her lack of interest in fluids, and is sucking water out of a frozen washcloth okay for her until she does finally cut them?

Is there any way we can trick her into taking milk?

  1. most probably is the teething.  you can also freeze lolipops, and let her suck at them. you can even make them out of milk.  don't worry, whatever it is, i'm sure it's just a phase she's going through.

  2. Could be.  When my son is cutting a tooth he isn't interested in his bottle, his binky (unless it is frozen) or food.  I found that he will drink his bottle if it is cold.  It is probably soothing to him.

  3. It could be that swallowing is what's hurting her. This could be a sign that she has something else wrong (like an ear infection). I would call the pediatrician and tell a nurse what's going on.
