  1. It depends if they are indigenous termites.

Sometimes if people migrate from Canada,

Canadian termites follow them and settle in their new home

    in the U.S.

Sometimes they just find the Canadians.

Canadian termites make unbearable crunching noises that may affect your sanity.

  2. only if they make your house collapse on top of your family.

  3. No, they are not known to carry infectious diseases.  They are not like flies or cockroaches, so no worries about your kids.  But you might want to worry about your house.  Over time, they can do a lot of damage.

  4. Termites do not eat humans, they eat rotted wood.  If the house is all wood, and you find even a few terminates, they came from a nest and can literally eat you out of house and home!  Have the house fumigated and be rid of them!

  5. In that kind of quantity, I'd not worry about them endangering the kids.  I would, however, have my house inspected immediately for damage to the wood.

In a general sense, termites are considered the number one source of "natural" CO2 - a greenhouse gas, so if you've got them, you'd do the world a favor by eradicating that nest.
