What cities easily accessible from Lucerne (by train or bus) are good places to see the Matterhorn from? What are the names of bus companies in Lucerne that operate day tours from Lucerne to the Matterhorn? Do any of these companies pick up and drop off at hotels?

  1. hey there! I was working in visp for a local chemical company. and guess what i could see the matterhorn from my office. ok it appeared only little and from the town it will be very hard to see it. it is worth taking the train ( a very nice train route) to zermatt and see it from nearby, you will not regret it!

    cheers

  2. The best place to see the Matterhorn is from the small ski resort town of Zermatt, which is only a short train journey from Visp. No petrol cars are allowed in the town to keep it free from exhaust pollution...and there are only battery driven cars and buses used as transport. When looking down over the town, it's a little bit like looking down on a model railway...with the little cars zipping around quietly.

Once in Zermatt, you can travel up to Gornergrat by rack railway...for fantastic views of the Matterhorn.

There are a couple of wonderful scenic train journeys to get you to Zermatt.

One is the Golden Pass route, which travels from Lucerne to Montreux (a visit to Chateau Chillon is a must) and from there you can catch another train to Zermatt.

Or the most direct way is on the Glacier Express, which travels from Cur to Zermatt (you can easily travel from Lucerne to Andermatt to connect with the train).

I would recommend that you stay at least 1-2 nights in Zermatt, which will give you time to travel up to see the mountain.

  3. you can't really see the Matterhorn from Visp... it's quite far away.  also, Visp isn't a terribly interesting place and really a very small town.  even Brig the nearby city isn't chock full of activities for a tourist.  i say just go to Zermatt; after all, it's a rare opportunity to see that most famous peak in the Swiss alps.  btw, you can't go up the Matterhorn unless you're rock climber (there are no trains/cable cars going up).

if there is a tour group leaving from Luzern to Zermatt (and i don't know if there is), the buses would leave likely from the Bahnhof.  it shouldn't be a big deal for you to walk from your hotel to the train station in the morning though, since Luzern is a very walkable city.
