I've never felt very attached to my parents, but last year I had this fantastic history teacher. He's seriously one of my favorite people ever and we just got along great. But of course, I'm a girl. The thing is, I've ALWAYS preferred male teachers to female teachers, especially once I got into middle and high school. They were just easier to connect with and less naggy. Can the Oedipus complex be present in non-familial situations?

  1. The Oedipus Complex is Freudian theory, and is supposedly a stage that an infant/toddler passes through. It's the phallic stage and it occurs roughtly between the ages of 3-5. I think you're a little older than 5.

  2. I wouldn't say that a situation like that would be considered on the same level as the Oedipus Complex. In fact, from what I have heard, it is entirely normal for people to have infatuations with people like teachers, who garner respect or admiration. It's normal to have a special attachment to people you admire or look up to.
