I was just reading about the Russian S-400 Triumph missiles. I agree that they are very advanced and capable, but can they bring down F-22 Raptors and B-2 Bombers or similar airplanes? How good are these missiles?

  1. The S300/400 series are very capable.  However, your question gets into Secret/Special Access Required programs; because you are asking about specific weapon system vulnerabilities.

So as a former Weasel, and a planner, I will tell you now that anyone who gives you a definite answer doesn't have a clue as what they are talking about.

I will say that one viable tactic for me as a planner is to attack the radars (not necessarily the missile batteries themselves) with TLAM/Cruise Missiles.  Destroying/disrupting the radars will enhance the inherent low-observable characteristics of the platforms you mention.

  2. Neither of these planes is built to be a super-fortress, but rather rely heavily on their stealth capabilities to avoid detection. So the answer is yes they could indeed bring down these planes, but they would have to find them first and that is the real trick.

  3. You can look it up on FAS

  4. The missile is a long range (400 km) Surface to Air missile. As such, it would be radar guided. The B-2 is nearly invisible to radar and as such would probably be fine. Same with the F-22. Sounds like the missile is best suited for conventional aircraft and medium range missiles.

  5. It is necessary to you? You were at war?

  6. Now, if the missiles weren't capable of bringing down airplanes, they wouldn't build them, would they?

Do you know how many planes the USAF lost in every war? Guess what broght them down... those kind of missiles.

  7. They could but not with any reliability.  The F-117 was brought down with a much less sophisticated missile because when it opens the bay to launch a missile it is visible from below; the missile fired was in the right place at the right time.  If they get a radar lock the aircraft will be shot down but it would be extremely difficult to get a radar lock.  If they suspect they are there they could mass fire missiles and hope to get a hit which is how they shot down Gary Powers U2 during the Cold War.

  8. i would have to say not a combat ranges were the planes could fire the HARM missile and take out the S-400. The planes are simply too radar invisible at long ranges. At close ranges like at 10 miles or less the system "may" get a lock.

  9. In theory a kid with a rock can bring down one of those airplanes.

The fact of the matter is that they would have no idea that either of those planes were even around until the target they were protecting began blowing up.
