Can the Spanish understand Mexicans?

And the other way around? Can someone speaking the Spanish from Spain be understood by someone speaking the Spanish of Mexico? Are they different enough to be called different languages, or would it just be more like a difference in accent?

Yeah, it would be more like an accent, or more accurately, a dialect.  They have different phrases, idioms, etc.  They even use different words for some things.  However, it's like the States and Britain, or even the East Coast and the West Coast.  It's the same language, different dialect.

Yes. Some differences in pronunciation and vocabulary. It's like the difference between British and American English. For example, Britons usually do not pronounce their final r's and the Brit word for truck is lorry. But every Briton understands an American and vice-versa.

Of course they can. Some differences would probably be the noticible slur of the letter "s", they usually sound like a lisp. Just like you said a different accent. All small countries have their own and unique accents even if they all share the same language.

The dialect is different, ofcourse. And some words you hear in Spain you won't hear a lot in Mexico, but yes, they will understand each other quite well.

My sister-in-law is Spanish from Barcelona and she says it is difficult sometimes to understand Mexican Spanish because they speak it so fast.

I was told by my friend in the UK that it is hard for her to always understand me on the phone because we speak American so fast and some of our slang is lost in the translation.

Alicia says even the Mexican Soap operas are difficult to understand, because it is spoken so rapid.

Yes they understand each other. Also, both in Mexico and Spain there are many different accents.

Oh, and for the person who said that they slur/lisp the s, that is incorrect.  They weren't even clear as to who THEY are....In Spain, they use a theta, but that is NOT on the s.  An s is pronounced almost like an s in English.  They theta (pronounce like th in the in English) on the Z and soft C (when followed by e or i).  It is a common misconception, even among American Spanish speakers, that they just lisp in Spain.  They don't. It is the correct pronunciation of the letters, not a lisp.  

And I find it odd that a Barcelonan would think that Mexicans speak fast, as they don't speak anywhere near as fast as they do in Andalucía (southern Spain) nor as fast as my friend from Madrid.  Now, want to hear a truly odd accent, try talking to someone from Buenos Aires!  They REALLY take Andaluz and go further with it!
