Can the US withdraw from the United Nations?

The Senate ratifies treaties with international organizations by 2/3 vote, but how does it repeal them? If the US want to get out of the UN (or the WTO, IMF, and NAFTA, for instance), how would it go about doing this?

  1. Yes, the Congress could withdraw. They've essentially done that in the past by refusing to pay the money they committed to for membership.

Withdrawing from the UN would not be good for America - it would lose influence in the world political scene at a time when it is already considered to be a poor performer in world politics.

  2. Yes the US can withdraw from the UN, but it probably wouldn't be a good idea. The US is a founding member of the UN it would be like a slap in the face to the legacy of FDR. A lot of nations would no longer trust the US and it's status in the World would diminish. The UN would still be around, the US provides approx 22% of the UN's budget. A sizable chunk, but not enough for the UN to be dismantled.

  3. It would withdraw by the same process to get in.

Bring the issue to the floor for a vote and see if you get the required votes.

There may be clauses in the treaties (penalties for withdrawal) but we would pay those penalties and move on.

  4. probably, but if it does, then the UN would go under since the US provides most of its funding.

  5. Yes, the United Nations can withdraw from the United Nations, and yes they have sort of done so in the past. But, if you think about it if the US withdraws from the UN then the UN will lose most of their funding, and potentially be at risk to be eliminated completly. The US is what keeps the UN running. If they withdraw, the UN will lose the rest of its credability.

  6. i hope so
