For example if a teacher was to explain to a student what the word "cut" means by miming the action...could it be said hat the teacher uses gestures to explain meanings?

  1. What does the word 'Mime ' mean ' ? Chambers says.' An ancient farcical play of real life, with mimicry ; it is a mimicry without words ; it is a buffoon.'

Now , when a teacher is explaining to a student,  he is certainly not a buffoon , by no means ! There is no farce or mimicry involved with it . So in your case it would not be a mime at all !

Thus an ordinary geturing cannot at all be miming, because there is no farce or mimicry involved there .

  2. Only if the teacher used some type of facial movement that aided in the explanation of the concept of cutting. That is my understanding anyway.
