What about beading and lacing with no problem? (the larger beads and lacing games for preschoolers)

Button a shirt?

Zip a zipper?

I know they all develop at their own pace but I am supposed to be watching my sons fine motor skills and working with him b/c he is behind right now. Thanks!

  1. Try getting the lacing and beading games for him. Also the puzzles that you button, lace, zip, snap etc.  That's what I have been doing for my 4 1/2 year old as well as letting him practice cutting. He cannot do all of these things really well but is getting better. He still has problems buttoning and cutting a straight line.

    Hope this helps

  2. They can use scissors but most cannot cut well.  Their cuttings have ragged edges but generally follow the form.  True that children develop at their own pace and it is not uncommon for boys to be late bloomers in the fine motor skill department (one theory is that boys develop their gross motor skills earlier).  Buttoning and zippering are also beyond the ability of the average 4-5 year old.  Keep working with your child and giving him lots of projects to develop those skills, but don't push him beyond his limits becuase you do not want to frustrate him either.

  3. No, the average 4 or 5 year old doesn't cut well with a scissors, or draw a straight line, or get a spoon in their mouth without spilling half the food on their shirt.  You're right that all kids develop at their own pace, and fine motor skills come late; plus, boys will be a little later than girls.  You're son will probably be riding a two-wheeler with ease before he can cut well with a scissors.  Just give him lots of opportunity to practice.  Drawing, cutting, lacing, puzzles, etc.

When my 3 year old was having trouble being poddy-trained, the doctor said, "Don't worry so much.  Hardly anybody goes to kindergarden in diapers!"  A very good perspective I try to use a lot in parenting . . . kids will learn what they need to learn - in THEIR OWN time!  :)

  4. maybe not because most 4-5 ylo cuttings have.....you know?rough edgesor not so fine cuttings. I also recomend Parental Guidance when doing this coz they might  cut their fingers!

  5. There is a huge range of cutting ability for typically developing children. Most children at 4 and 5 can manipulate the sicssors and cut out a shape with straightlines with in 1/4 inch of the lines (meaning they do not cut the line perfectly straight by are jagged within 1/4 inch either side of the line). More complicated shapes and cutting with more difficulty. Beading and lacing for a 4 to 5 year old should not be very difficult especially with large beads. A child of this age should be able to unzip and unbutton with little difficulty. Starting a zipper or button is often more difficult.
