  1. Probably not since the hospital SOLD that particular bill to the collection agency without your consent.

  2. They can try if they think they can put a lien on your assets and it is a major bill. Most people blow them off. It is all so corrupt iwth grossly inflated charges from greedy doctors and hospitals. Most are incomprhensive bureaucratic gobblidy goop. Nobody you will talk with makes any sense. The billing format is from another planet.

Sick, suffering tired people just don't want the hassle from bureaucrats with attitudes. the medical establish is horrible. If they can make it worlse they will. The threaten to ruin your credit and the u.s. congress wil always pass laws to help the rich doctors and hospital. they charge any d**n thing the care to. hate'em.

  3. A collection agency can take you to court to get their money.  It is unlikely a collection company would be willing to establish a payment plan as well, so if you are unable to pay upfront, you may want to call them on their threat and see if a claim materializes.  Collection agencies themselves cannot sue the debtor unless they are a collection law firm.

  4. If it's relatively early, you should call the hospital and tell them you don't have the money. Most will work out some kind of payment plan, often for less than what you owe, rather than getting nothing.

  5. Yes.  if you owe the money.  Agencies buy those debts and then sue to collect them.
