I know that the baby boomers will help create jobs but there has to be limit as to how many nurses a hospital can afford to pay.

  1. Ultimately, it won't be the hospitals paying; it'll be the patients.

With the median age of people in the United States constantly increasing, health care professionals will start seeing more and more age-related diseases, many of which require significant amounts of care. Who will give it, if not nurses?

The New York Times says there will be a need for ONE MILLION nurses by the year 2010.

  2. I dont think so.  Engineers jobs are tied to supply and demand, if or the widgit of the moment decreases, then so will jobs.  In nursing on the other hand people are always sick, and not to mention they are living longer.  Right now the shortage of nurses is worldwide not just in the USA.  Nursing schools have waiting lists and cant churn the new ones out fast enough. There will be a demand for years to come.

  3. It's possible but there are always going to be sick people.

  4. Baby boomers will not only be creating jobs by retiring, they will be getting old and sicker meaning more health care jobs. Part of the problem with the nursing shortage is that the programs are turning away qualified applicants and aren't turning out as man nurses that are needed because there just aren't enough programs. If there is a catch up, it is being delayed because of this. There are also a lot of people that get into the programs and realize they can't cut it, and they drop out too late for someone to fill their spot. There is also a high rate of people leaving the job because its so stressful. Even if things slow down, there are so many jobs for nurses out there I really think that if you are suited to being a nurse, you will always have a job even if it means you have to wait a little longer for your dream job.

ADD: Keep in mind that while general population growth is happening, most of the predicted demand will be with elderly patients. There will still be other jobs, but I really think that anyone that wants to work in geriatrics will always have a job. It isn't as competitive as something like labor and delivery either, lots of people want to hold babies but most people don't want to wash old people.

  6. Of course it can, but by the looks of things it won't be happening.  There is always a shortage of good health care professionals.
