  1. Depends on how you look at it. You mean car reverse, or turn around reverse like previously stated?

If the first, of course not, unless it's an alien spacecraft.

    If the latter, then YES!

  2. Can a plane fly backwards?

Yes.    There are three ways a plane can fly backwards.

#1.  If the plane has a forward airspeed of 100 mph and is flying against a 101 or greater mph head wind.   While the airspeed indicator in the plane will say the plane is flying 100 mph,  it will be going backwards when you measure it by ground speed.   The greater the headwind,  the more the plane will be going backwards when using a reference point on the ground.    This was a real problem with the old Piper Cubs as they did not have much speed in the first place.

#2.   There is a Russian jet fighter that can actually flip over in flight so it faces backwards but is still going "forward."   When you see it,  the plane suddenly appears as if it is flying backwards.   It is a great stunt when an enemy is closing fast from the rear and suddenly the Russian flips over and fires off a missile right into the face of the oncoming plane.

#3.  There is a stunt called a hammer head stall.  The plane goes straight up,  losing airspeed,  at the very last second the pilot kicks the rudder over so the plane slowly turns in the air and comes back down,  nose first.  If the pilot kicks the rudder to late,  the plane will not turn over and he will suddenly be coming back down tail first.  Not a good situation as it puts a lot of stress on the plane and it can come apart.

On the ground,  planes go backwards all the time,  either with reverseable pitch props or with thrust reversers on the jet engines.   The old B17s and B24s could be made to go backwards on the ground by clever use of the brakes and outboard engines,  wigglying the plane backwards.

  3. If you are asking can a standard fixed wing aircraft go backwards, the only time I have seen it is when they are on the ground and the propeller(s) are in beta mode. Otherwise, I suppose a plane could technically be going backward if it was facing into a headwind that exceeded its forward thrust. Otherwise though, a fixed wing cannot fly backwards, the airfoil of the wing cannot maintain lift without air flowing over it in the proper direction.

    Helicopters can fly backwards.

  4. i think the question is referring to the car type of reverse. which as far as in flight only smaller lightweight planes could ever experience this and only by a function of airspeed being less than headwind. planes take lift to get off the ground, lift is a funtion of the wing going forward through the air and generating a lower pressure above the wing than there is below it. this causes the plane to rise into the air. the wings are designed to generate this lift while moving forward through the air.

  5. YES if the headwind is stronger/faster then the airplanes stall speed - People flying gliders and ultralight pilots surely have experienced this... I know I have. Now for a commertial jet, I don't think it have ever been tested.

  6. Sure. Tail slide.

  7. Sure. Turn around and fly the same path back
