  1. They can't take all of it, but yes they will garnish a certain percentage of it.  Like 15% or something.

    I think in Nov. you can transfer your loans to the department of education and get a cap on payments of 10% of your income. I am getting to this point also and it is scary. Even 10% is too high if you are on low fixed income.

    No one on here seems to have any answers and although it says on the department of education website that loans can be discharged in bankruptcy, I don't think they can. I went through bankruptcy and I still have $30,000 in loans that gained $10,000 in interest while I was in Chapter 13.
