Question:

Can the items in a girl's purse save her in the wild?

As a man I'm amazed by how many things women carry around in their purses. So many little tools, bottles of liquid, and make-up supplies. Enough stuff for Macgyver to save the world ten times over.

And that got me thinking... what if a 20 something woman was dropped in the middle of the amazon rainforest with nothing but the contents of her purse? What could she do with all those things to help her survive? Those little eyelash tools, flammable liquids, chemical-based make-up stuff?

This is what I've come up with so far...

Nail file + dental floss = A spear/shiv for protection/hunting.

Condoms = Collecting/carrying rain water to drink.

Condoms = Elastic for some sort of projectile weapon.

Compact Mirror = Reflector for signaling passing airplanes.

Cigarette Lighter = To make fire.

Cigarette Lighter + Hairspray = Blowtorch.

Can you think of anything else? What could she do with tweezers, tampons, cigarettes, magazines, hairclips, credit cards, car keys, gum, and all that makeup

  1. Quite honestly I think mothers of small children would have the best survival rates of all these women dropped off.

Most "moms" appear to have (I'm not a mom) food in their purses! LOTS Of food!  & Tylonal, bandaids, other types of first aid supplies, tissues, etc.

As for women in general though--almost all of us carry tissues & a maxi pad so we'd be "safe" if we were cut open! Other than that can't really see the help in having that "soft" stuff.

Actually if you got working women--they would have an extra set of pantyhose & they work well enough to be used as a rope if you tied all sets & spare sets together plus nylon is really really strong!

  2. watch  the movie "incidents on and off mountain road" its all about a girl who uses the stuff she has in her purse against this guy because her car broke in the middle of the woods and her husband taughter her survival stuff...its one of the master of horror movies

but yea, she rips her dress [or underwear i cant remember] and makes a grounded big slingshot out of the sharp metal bar thing on nail clippers which was pretty cool.

  3. Certainly survival in the urban jungle. And what business do you have looking in my purse?!?!?!?

  4. paper can be use for fire.

clippers could pick something up or help clean something

some things could be thrown to scare animals away-a bottle of liquid makeup might could knock something out

gum might could help hold a shelter together.

    tampons have strings.

  5. Ha!  So true.  It's amazing the stuff that's in there.

Sounds like you have the making of a new TV show: Survivor Woman.

  6. You can fashion a credit card into quite a sharp cutting edge. this culd be used to skin and gut any animal. If somebody in prison got there hands on a cc, bet your bottom $$ it would be sharpened into a knife.

I bet you would get better answers if you asked a prison guard what the items would be used for in a prison yard jungle.\

The rubbers are a good way to transpor tsmall amounts of water. Perhaps catching rain or dew off a large leaf into a hanging rubbah. mmmm.

The tampons could be saved for anything you may need cotton for.Itcoud be used to help treat an open wound perhaps an animal bite, puncture wound,...

You could probably make a cutting too from the keys as well. You could fashion some sortof fish hook from they split ring that the keys are strung on.

Cigarrettes can be traded with the natives and could very well save you from becoming dinner.

Cigs can act as an insect repellant. if you soak them in water and rub the juice on your body it may repel the mosquitoes. Insects hate nicotine.

Maybe you have a magnifying glass. Endless fire.

You could use magazines as toilet paper, or to start fires.

You could rub one edge of the nail file on a stone to sharpen. This metal edge can then be used to sharpen sticks for arrows, darts, spears.  Also even to shave if you were a man. maybe trim your hair.

I think I would actually use the floss for flossing. Acouple years in the rainforest can really mess up your dental hygeine. Just look atthe photos of amazonian natives.

Maybe use floss to bundle up poison dart frogs while transporting.  Tarantulas too. These bird eating spiders are good protein and are said to taste like crab when cooked over a fire

i cantsee much use for the makeup except maybe to trade w/natives. maybe use it to paint colors on a hand carved fishing lure? I dont know. Does it keep the begs away??ladies? I've never worn the ****,

I would treat anything metal as if it were gold. Choose wisely what you make because you will only have 1 chance to ake the right tool properly. I good fish hook might be your lifeline. A poorly made string might cause you to lose this 1 well made fish hook thus ruining your survival chances.

Chances are you would die, but with a little ingenuity, you would quickly learn to be MaCguyver yourself.

  7. Adding to Nate's answer, tobacco is useful for removing blood suckers from the skin.  Safety pins can be fish hooks.Lotion on the feet can prevent fungi. Be careful with anything like perfumes as they attract mosquitoes and such and cleanse any food scents off of the hands and body.  Little pieces of crackers or candy can be used to bait mice or rats, wild ones are cleaner and I have eaten rat and it was like roast beef.  a big rock can do them in and rabbits are easy to get with rocks.  Some underwear elastics make good slingshots.  A good cell phone might get a message out.  Nail files can slit open a branch and be lashed to it with vines to make a weapon. Vines can be used for making snares.  From a high open area or tree top a mirror can signal out, even to satalites SOS   three dots, three dashes, three dots. rinsing ones clothes and body in the local water and rubbing soil on the body helps cut down on ones own scent identity making one less identifialble to predators.  Snipped off hair, lit can be a bug repellent.  Depending on body weight a person can live a long time without meals.  I used to eat white pine needles for the flavor, vitamin C and the illusion I was eating. Most roots are harmless and provide something to chew on.  Any plant that a person is repeatedly attracted to most likely has something good for them.  Stripped bark, using keys and things have a soft, damp, often nourishing cambien layer.  Some types are medicinal.  Three extra inches on the waste can keep a person going about amonth or so and a lot of miles down stream can be covered in that time.  Under rocks will often be lizards and the tails take no skinning or anything and one can let the rest of the lizard go to get used to its new name "Bob".  A lipstick can be used for leaving messages along the way should she be searched for.  Antacids can be used for treating bites.  A sanitary pad can be mounted backwards and used for some comfort resting on a tree limb.  Fallen tree limbs can be fashioned into weapons with files, clippers, scissors and such.  With an extra pair of sox one pair can always be clean and dry and will have to be changed oftenon her walk downstream.  If one sings in the woods (all animals have their crys and calls) there is a range where the sound fits in with the jungle.  It relaxes critters and one becomes more a part of it and not such an invader or a prepator.  Some wild animals can be quite friendly then and keep her company.   Fire made from glasses, lighter, matches can provide signal, warmth, clothes drying (very important) and protection while sleeping.  A collaspable umbrella is a tiny tent and during rains a cistern.  A nail file can easily skin a snake and most are edible.  Panty hose can be used as a fish net.  Moss can be tasty and provide fiber.   If she gets a wound let the flies land on it and leave lavrae that becomes maggots.  they will clean out the wound and after are a good source of protein.  She should signal frequently and leave signs.   A natural conservancy observing the Amazon via satellite would notice a mirrored signal repeated at changing locations.

  8. Use the deo spray or perfume on a cigarette lighter and the fire can scare away animals.

Ppl come up with really creative ideas with whatever is left with them when they are desperate to survive. So I'm sure the otherwise useless car keys or tampons might fit some situation as the need arises. But if i put the question back to you, what chance do you have in surviving the same situation without any of those in your hands.

  9. tampoons=to make fire on top same w/ magazines. tweezers for any injury. credit cards=digging tool, who cares?!
