Can the original owner just cross out his name and put mine?

My stepfather bought me a vehicle and the title was sign over to him, he left state before he transferred the title, he did not sign it or anything, can i take the title to the original person who sold it to us and have them change the name on it so that i can get it transferred into my name?

  1. probably not, check w/dmv first, the both of you will end up paying the transfer fees and sales taxes due on individual transactions, and the insurance thing will pop up too if it was on the road


  2. NO! That would be a crime!!!

  3. No you can't.  Your stepfather must get a title for it.  After that  he can sell or give the vehicle to you.
