Question:

Can the plant Stevia, which is 200-300 times sweeter than table sugar, be a better alternative to sugar beets?

Ethanol production has spiked corn prices in consumer goods. Stevia use in production might be a good alternative.

  1. I don't know how easy it is to produce, but it is great stuff! I buy it in powder form and you only need a little.

    One huge advantage is that it is a natural source and not hyper-processed like sugar - and we know how bad so much sugar is for us.  

    Likely the sugar industry would have a fit if you suggested it, though!  

    I think it's a great idea.


  2. Stevia has no sugars, and therefore cannot produce ethanol. It's used as a sugar substitute for people on diets. I have grown some, but its taste is too strong.

    Better is the waste from cane sugar.
