  1. Well, it would save if you have a ps2 memory card of course. Because I have the ps2 and in order to save your data with a ps1 game is to have the ps1 memory card. But I think ps3 games have better quality than ps2 games.

  2. The PS3 will play PS2 games and with the same quality played on a PS2. Because It's not blu-ray.

  3. Only some PS3 versions can play PS2 games (eg 60GB), when you play PS2 games on a widescreen eg LCD or plasma there is a small increase in quality, through up-scaling and smoothing of the picture quality, but its not really much to get over excited about

  4. You can run PS2 games only on 20GB, 60GB, and on old (with chrome trim) US 80GB. 40GB, new 80GB (without chrome trim) and upcoming 160GB can't play PS2 games. If your PS3 can run PS2 games, it'll upscale the game (slightly better graphics).

  5. The PS3 will play PS2 games if you have the right version.  You can create an internal memory card on your PS3 that acts as either a PS1 or PS2 memory card and will allow you to save PS1/2 game files onto the PS3 hard drive.  As for better or worse quality: when playing a PS2/1 game you have an option to turn on or off an option called smoothing, it technically is supposed to smooth roughness based on pixelation but is a very negligible amount, so little that you may not even notice.  The games do, however, seem to load faster on my PS3 than they did on my PS2, hope that helps!
