Can the same area code be considered long distance?

I am confused as to why I must dial an area code to a phone number that has the same area code that I am dialing with from my landline. Is this really considered long distance?

Serious answers only please...

Thank you!

  1. Sure it can.  Most Canadian provinces and all our territories, and some American states, are bigger than some countries.

  2. you shouldn't have to dial the area code if it's the same  as the landline's. You only dial it if it's different.

  3. Dialing the area code doesn't mean it is long distance.  Some regions have adopted 10 digit dialing.  What this means is that you have to dial 10 digits for all numbers you dial, local or not.  You can tell if it is going to charge you by whether or not you have to dial a 1 with it.  If you just dial the 10 digits, then it is probably because there are multiple area codes in your area and they have adopted 10 digit dialing.  If you dial 1+ the 10 digit number, most likely, it is a long distance call.  The 1 has always been the prefix that indicates a toll call.

  4. yes unfortunately it is.  also if you call long distance within your same state it usually cost more than calling out of state.
