Can the security system on a Mercedes (E320) be reset? If so, is it a quick fix or is it expensive?

I have not used my remote to open my car for a while since it broke. I use the key - all of a sudden today the driver's side opened but not the other doors - and nothing will turn on -- do you think the problem is with the IR receiver in the door, the lock itself or is it the security system?

  1. if you can afford to drive a Mercedes, you can afford to pay for advice from a real mechanic.

  2. There are two likely problems. The first is a dead battery (car battery, that is). That's why it's all systems "off". A new battery will be $75-$100.

The other problem is that there are dead batteries in the remote itself. These remotes have two small batteries (I think the number is CR2025, available in any drugstore or hardware store). You get to them by sliding the key out of the remote. Then pry off the top of the remote to expose the battery holder. There should be an illustration in the owner's manual. If you're not comfortable doing this, a dealer can accomplish the task for under $20.

  3. Probably both the IR Receiver and the lock assembly. To replace both you're probably looking at $800.

Take it to the dealer for an estimate,,,,,,if you don't get it fixed they'll charge you for the diagnosis.
