Can the successful players of SW19 replicate their performances at US Open?
It is would be a bit premature to make any predictions for the upcoming United States Open championship. What is astonishing about this championship this year is that the defending champ of the tournament won’t be contesting this season as a result of his health issues where as the man who is currently ruling the tour has not passed ever the semi final round here.
So, here are some of the top favorite names who definitely have high chances of winning this season’s last Grand Slam event after their performances at the SW19 few days ago.
Rafael Nadal
After triumphing in his eighth major and strengthening his position as the game’s number one player, a lot of analysts are talking about his performance in the upcoming US Open.
First of all, one thing cannot be neglected no matter how well he has performed at Wimbledon, that the man who is currently ranked number one in the ATP world’s ranking has not won a US Open ever in his career.
The US Open’s place as the concluding major of the season is always going to be hard for the player who works toughest on the court, and its surface is both quicker than Nadal’s taste and least tolerating on his stiff joints.
This season is different from 2008 in one major respect: no Olympics, therefore the Spaniard won’t be travelling halfway across the world to triumph in one more championship before the Open begins, thus draining himself out even more.
That should go in his favor, but if he is going to succeed in the Open, it’ll perhaps require being in the next number of seasons, and need to be achieved by breaking down the outburst of a big, flat hitter who pulls him to the distance.
Nadal’s aims for the future are perhaps to snatch that US Open title and tie Bjorn Borg’s record at Roland Garros. That would provide him with a total of three more titles, which would also level Borg’s Grand Slam total.
If he manages that in the next few years, then the analysts will begin discussing about the prospects of him leveling Pete Sampras' total.
Tomas Berdych
There is no doubt about the fact that Tomas Berdych looked equally capable of winning the grass court Grand Slam final along with Rafael Nadal this season.
He perhaps could have made a fantastic match of it if he had prevented his perfect performance for the final match on Sunday and lifted his game for the big match; in other
It goes without any question that Rafa’s attributes, more particularly mental ones, are truly exceptional beyond any doubt.
Berdych’s victory on the grass and his semifinal appearance on the clay court of Paris have contributed to his having a world ranking number eight, and should make him proud going into the summer hard court year where he has defeated Rafa on two occasions.
New York quick courts should honor his flat smashing as well as serving, but it will be tough on his thin frame. The sad news is that he has never passed the fourth round there; however the good news is that he had never been past the fourth round of French Open or the quarters of grass court Grand Slam tournament prior to this season.
Andy Murray
The number one player from the Great Britain Andy Murray proved at Wimbledon this season that he has got the flair to beat the top ranked tennis players as he successfully reached the semi final of the tournament.
The Scot now has a lot of force to contest in North America, both in the sense that Murray is defending points from his win in Canada last season and must show that he’s yet a danger at the majors.
The quick surface of the US Open will definitely help Andy Murray to go a long way into the last Grand Slam tournament of this year provided that he plays with the same confident and enthusiasm that he showed few weeks ago at Wimbledon.
