I wrote a post dated check to my doctor with his expressed permission. His office changed the date on the check and deposited it, causing other checks to bounce. Is what they did legal? what can I do?

  1. Changing the date is not allowed, it is referred to as altering the check. But my guess is you probably don't have much recourse. The date on a check does not affect its negotiability. So post dating a check is meaningless. Post dating does not stop it from being negotiated so if you work that out with someone, you have to trust that they won't present it, because post dating does not prevent them from presenting it. I would contact the doctor's office though and see if something can be worked out if they really did tell you they would hold it.

  2. As far as I know, you aren't even allowed to write a post dated check

  3. Whaaaaaaaat!!!!!!!!!! you can sue them. Take them to court.  I dout they change the date they just went ahead and deposited.  The bank does not pay attention to those things. Sue the doctor and the bank.

  4. They cant change a date on the check without you putting your initials next to it. They can't change a date on a check, no way is this legal. If you have a small claims court in your area, use it and sue them for the bill, the damages and the interests
