  1. no they can't, unless the player knows that the ball was out and he just wants to be "funny" ( for example if the ball is like 5 feet behind the line it is silly to challenge)

  2. the umpire cant overrule the call provided it was called on time...

  3. No.  The better umpires still over-rule linesmen and not force the players in to a challenge.

Federer hates Hawkeye, and part of his argument is that it forces the players to do the umpire's job.  And watching some umpires, I kind of agree with him.  Some of them just sit and wait for the players to challenge, when it was completely obvious to all but the blind that the linesman's call was wrong.

  4. No, the hawkeye has the last call.

  5. no

  6. No, Why would an umpire be able to? If that was the case it would mean hawk-eye isn't accurate therefore shouldn't be used in the first place.

The theory is hawk-eye is 100% accurate all the time so how can it be overruled by anyone apart from tennis authorities who could remove hawk-eye.

  7. I don't think the umpire can overrule the call. For example, when a call is made by a linesman, and the umpire has not overruled it, a player who has lost the point will challenge that call. So, that call, technically, has been made by the umpire as well. The player in effect is challenging the umpire's call. The video evidence will be the final. The umpire cannot overrule the video evidence, that would be stupid on his/her part.

  8. The Chair Umpire cannot overrule a hawkeye challenge.

There is a small error rate on hawkeye so it's not 100% accurate. Unfortunately if hawkeye is used, it is the definitive call.

Hawkeye does pose certain problems though. Umpires are less likely to overrule calls as they see them because who wants to be proved wrong? They're more inclined to have the players make the challenge themselves. Then of course, if the player is correct with the challenge, he/she complains to the umpire that he/she should have seen the correct call.

It's also unfair to players who seldom get to play on a court with hawkeye.

  9. Hawkeye is not 100% accurate. It's accurate TO 3 cm one way or the other.  If a ball grazes the line, then I think that is too close. Maybe they shouldn't allow such close balls to be ruled by hawkeye, and leave it up to the umpire to decide. ? Not sure. I like it in general. I've had balls called out -especially aces, when I've clearly hit a winner - and I wish I had hawkeye to  challenge disgruntled "enemies".
