Question:

Can theologians be trusted to interpret the Bible if they promote some verses and hide others?

When is the last time you heard a minister quote from Matthew 12:7 in which Jesus said: "I will have mercy, and not sacrifice." Jesus was quoting Hosea 6:6 which appears to be a condemnation of the idea of sacrifice.

And yet we hear this all the time: "Christ died for our sins." Which was from Paul/Saul who never even met Jesus in the flesh... and was rather vigorous in terrorizing the ones who had accepted the Original Gospel (Acts 7:58 to 8:3).

So can we trust theology that promotes some verses and hides others.

  1. So then you also reject the words of Jesus where He Himself said that He is giving His life a sacrifice and ransom for many?

Paul is speaking not Paul's words, but the Word of God.

Since you reject Jesus and Paul (through whom Jesus is speaking), then you are the one that cannot be trusted to interpret the Bible.

  2. Hmmm, good question.

First though you say that Matthew 12:7 is condemning sacrifice - well that's not exactly true.  What Christ is saying is that it would be better for us to give love and charity to those less fortunate than ourselves instead of bringing sacrifices to the altar.

Jesus would rather have us be merciful to those in need instead of sacrificing to Him.

And your comment on Saul/Paul not meeting Jesus in the flesh - neither will you or I.  But won't meeting Him in His original state (Heavenly) be even better than meeting Him in His earthly state?

I think that Paul was the perfect selection to teach the Christians.  Because he was so very against them and so very much for the misguided teachings of the Pharisees that when he was changed by the Christ on his way to Damascus to bring the Christians back in chains he became Christianity's biggest champion.

But to answer your question, trust the Almighty, that He will place in your life what you need to learn His will.

    Be Blessed:-)
