i work for Vons, a company that Safeway owns ,as a supervisor. today, loss prevention was at our store and i think they fired a fellow supervisor ( that had been there 15 years) i know our store is in a critical cash situation, and i've heard supervisors from other stores in the same situation are getting fired left and right for tiny mistakes that usually wouldnt even require a write up...is this fair???

  1. No its not fair, but unfortunatly yes they can....I dont know what state you live in but here in ohio we have a labor relations board. Its pretty much set up to help non Union workers. They help people who are possibly dismissed from jobs unfairly.   In situations like this it may be possible to collect unemployment compensations from the discharging employer. I know it doesnt change the situation, but the compensation will help.  Its terrible that some employers use these tactics on loyal employees....

  2. I'm from Florida.  Your state might be like ours where it's called a right-to-work state.  That means thast an employer can fire you for any reason within the law meaning it cannot be for race, s*x, religion, political, stance, or disabilities.  Anything outside of that you can be fired for without notice.  With the situation going on where you work, I can bet that it's a right-to-work state.  They are trying to clean house and get better management in to the picture.  The easiest justifyable way to do that is to find a flaw in current management no matter how ubsurd it may be.  It gives them a reason.

Note:  In situations like yours, you should be safe.  Only management feels heat like this.  They need regular employees to get the work done so they go after management.

  3. If you don't like it, start your own store.  You are not entitled to work there, and you have the right to find whatever way through life that will accept you.  It isn't fair, it's America.

I'm certain that's not what you want to hear, sorry.  Get more education and do something you love.

Edit: Imagine that...  Reread my second statement then this...  Quit acting like a victim, like a lamb waiting to be slaughtered.  Grow some guts.  It's Vons for God's sake.  Were you expecting anything different from a soulless corporation?  You and your co-workers aren't people to your employer, you're labor supply.

When times get tough, sacrifices have to be made; that is true for everyone, true for Vons, true for you.  If you think that life is going to get any easier in this country any time soon, think again.  All across the nation, labor is being stretched to produce more with less.  This country will soon be cut down to bone, and the suffering will be distributed in ways that will not be fair.

The question: Will you slave away, waiting for the axe to hit your neck?  Or will you take the steps to put yourself in a position to thrive in this world regardless of what Vons wants?  The America of your parents and grandparents has almost entirely faded away.  Those who cannot adapt to this hypercompetitive, totally uncertain, global environment may find themselves left out.

Don't be mad at me, I don't like it myself, and I'm not handling it very well either.
