Today a manager from the leasing office visited my apartment. I live with my significant other and I have been there for a year. They asked me to come down to the leasing office and out of defence (this has never happened before so i didnt know what to say...) I said I was just staying there for a few days. The man asked if the persons' who had their name on the lease was home and I stated no... then he said, "well then you are an illegal resident..." and walked off.... I'm all paranoid now... i thought that if the owner of the house says its okay that i can stay... could they force him to make me leave....? My mail comes here....

  1. Depends on what the lease says that your friend signed. Most will state that all parties over the age of 18 must be co-signers on the lease. This is to protect both the signer and the rental company. If there are 13 people living in a one bedroom apartment, chances are you're ripping the place up, so the company is protecting their own interests. It also protects the signer because that way unwelcome guests or family that stay too long can be evicted by the signer.

Most leases also place restrictions on guests and parties. Several that I have signed in the past have had a rule stating that overnight guests are only allowed a max of two weeks. Any time over that must be approved by the landlord. A specific instance I heard of this being helpful, is if (this is just an example) you become a loafer who leaches off your sig, you refuse to get a job, you eat their food, you are loud, you leave your stuff all over... then you have the audacity to ask for their last cig...

They can pick up the phone and call either the cops or the rental agency and have your butt on the lawn before you can say 'squatter's rights'.

Just look at their lease and find the section detailing these kinds of regulations. It may not be too late to simple ask to be added for a small fee.
