I have almost 4 years of retail experience in retail and I recently got hired at Urban Outfitters in California. I talked to them today and they said they could offer me min wage. I don't understand why when I got paid $11/hour and my last job, and $10.50/hour before that. Can they pay me this low?

  1. ys the minuim is about 7/8 $ an hour i think

  2. Yess they definitly can. Jobs are reali hard to get at this time. U shud have stayed at yur higher paying jobs cuz sasdly u might b stuck with minimum wage now

  3. of course. that is why we have a minimum wage law! but you dont have to take the job...look elsewhere.

  4. As long as they pay at least minimum wage, of course it's legal.  What does your last job have to do with anything?  Why didn't you stay there?

  5. You do not have a right to make as much or more as you did on your last job.

I was making $12.50/hour as a line cook in Vermont, but when I moved to NY the going rate was $8/hour.  There was nothing I could do but find work in construction which was paying $15.

Don't take the job.  They will get what they pay for.

  6. Of course they can.  That's why it's called minimum wage.  You are in a tight job market and Urban Outfitters probably has a line of people who will be glad to take the job at minimum wage.  They don't need to offer more.

  7. yes, they can pay you min wage. Just simply don't take the job.

  8. Yeah, they can pay you anything they want to.

Not lower than minimum wage of course.

  9. I worked at the one in SF for over 3 years.  Everyone starts at minimum. And it's perfectly legal.  I suggest GET OUT NOW!!!!!

Horrible company.  Very fun most of the time and most of my friends I have met through that job, but there are more cons than pros.

I should have left sooner. And the customers SUCK!

----and at MOST you will get 15cent to 25cents more.  Raises twice per year.

  10. They can pay you whatever (as long as it's more than minimum wage).  That doesn't mean you have to accept it.  Personally, I would be offended, tell them so, and find another job.

  11. By federal law they have to pay you the minimum wage.  Anything above that is up to them.  Tell UO that you want no less than $11 per hour as you are bringing experience with you.  If they don't take it, you don't take the job.  You are worth more than that and they know it.
