The other day this stupid cashier at the checkout I was at asked me for my debit pin number out loud and there was people behind me, I should of said it out loud but there really wasn't any other way around it. Can thieves still use that to steal my identity if they were in line behind me??

  1. Only if they steal your ATM card, or make a copy of your ATM card.

Be careful whenever a cashier or waitress swipes your card, they might swipe the card through a copier that stores your digital information. Then they can make copies of your credit or debit card.

  2. More than likely, no, unless there was someone there who managed to see and memorize your card number AND is the type of criminal that produces fake ATM cards.  Even if all that happened, an even slimmer chance they could steal your identity.

However, if it bothers you that much, you can call your bank and request a new card with a new number or, depending on your bank and what they offer, you may be able to change your PIN at an ATM.

I would also call the store's manager and ask them why the cashier would be asking for anyone's PIN.  Don't they have key pads for you to enter it?  Also, if it's a debit, they can just run it through like a credit card and have you sign the slip.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

  3. I work in the Banking Industry and that cashier now has your card number and your pin.  I suggest you call the number that is on the back of your debt card and have your card deactivated.  Some banks will just have you change your pin number, but that requires your presents at the bank.  Go in with your identification and request a pin number change.  Let them know what happened.  Never give out your pin number to anyone!

  4. Only if they also have your ATM card.
