Can thumb sucking of a baby be stopped?

When the baby is young, we can make it a practice to take out the finger whenever it is keeping it. And it will gradually decrease. But the baby is developing this even when it is mother's womb. It feels secured when it does that and denying that is not good in the long run. My daughter had this habit and she is bold than my son for whom we didn't allow to thumbsuck. When the baby is grown up a little, we should try to stop.
