Question:

Can transition lenses lose or gain sensitivity?

I just got some transition lenses, and I like them except they don't work in the car. A coworker told me that they will eventually work better in the car and become more sensitive if I keep leaving them in the sunlight when I'm not using them.

Is this true? Can transition lenses be "seasoned"? Or will they act the same way in 2 years as they do now?

  1. Car windshields have a uv reduction coating between the sheets of glass. It's standard issue and required by law. The transitions lenses react to UV light. Your windshield is filtering out too much for them to activate properly.

Eventually, yes, they will become more sensitive. Though I do not recommend leaving them in the sun or going out of your way to make them change. They will eventually take on a permanent yellowish tint.

  2. I prefer the ones they call transitions next generation they seem to adjust better. http://us.transitions.com/NR/rdonlyres/A...

  3. Transition lenses respond to UV light and fortunately car windows and windshields block UV light.  Unfortunately, that means your transition lenses will not respond much in the car.  I do not believe they will become more sensitive if you leave them in the sunlight.
